What is Afro Beat '69?

AFRO BEAT is officially defined as a combination of traditional Yoruba music, jazz, highlife, funk and chanted vocals, fused with percussion and vocal styles popularized by Fela Kuti. However an intellectual definition doesn’t capture the true essence of Afro Beat. Afro Beat is more than just a style of music. It is an unadulterated voice of social awareness and astute political consciousness geared at the reawakening of the better angels of the human spirit that speaks against injustices of an establishment. Afro Beat represents the rhythmic passion of an under served people, in simple terms Afro Beat is our voice, the voice of the people.
AfroBeat 69 exists to be the lighthouse of a growing movement and the online home for Afro Beat music. It is an organic resource where readers can get the latest information on anything involving Afro Beat music. A grassroots organization that unites artists and fans to share and evolve a culture that covers everything from music to fashion to news. Afro Beat has a vast but understated influence on a broad spectrum of people from James Brown to Jay-Z and with this platform we aim to continue to raise it’s profile not only to avid Afro Beat purists but also to the general public at large. Afro Beat is on the rise once again and we want you to be a part of the journey.
